Top Picks for Environmentally Friendly Products

Feeling a little guilty about all the chemicals in your current cleaning routine? Or maybe a little nervous about having all those toxic materials around toddlers in the house?

Whatever your reasons for wanting to explore non-toxic cleaning regiments, they’re valid! Furthermore, there are options to address any concerns you have – while maintaining the cleanliness and quality you’re looking for!

It can be tricky to choose products that are both effective and non-toxic.

Labels tend to be complicated, and the words “natural” or “organic” shouldn’t necessarily set your mind at ease, because these products are not regulated by the USDA. All natural companies aren’t even technically required to list their ingredients. There’s always a chance that they actually included some chemicals. So, how do you know how to select products that are safe and healthy for your family, and get the job done? As a seasoned expert in green house cleaning, I’ve tried some of everything, and have a few favorites.

  1. Ecos All Purpose Cleaner Orange PlusThis is a plant-based cleaner that works as well as other chemical versions I’ve tried and receives an A rating on EWG’s GUIDE TO HEALTHY CLEANING.  A close second is Seventh Generation Disinfecting Multi-Surface Cleaner. Try the Lemongrass Citrus Scent. As a bonus, it’s quite affordable!
  2. Bon Ami Powder CleanserThis is a classic that I use on a daily basis. Another “A” rated product on EWG.org, this is a staple in my arsenal and I recommend it to all my clients.
  3. Seventh Generation Toilet Bowl Natural Cleaner, Emerald Cypress & Fir: I highly recommend Seventh Generation products and this one in particular. It cleans, decalcifies, and freshens even the most neglected toilet bowls, and it has a great scent that keeps bathrooms fresh.
  4. LA’s Totally Awesome Power Oxygen Base Cleaner: This non-toxic cleaner is one of my favorites and I might venture to say it’s the best I’ve used. The product also gets an A rating for their great ingredient disclosure. The really exciting part? You can find it at the dollar store – for ONE dollar – so you can restock often (and I know you’ll need to)!
  5. Your Own Homemade Cleaning Solution

Don’t underestimate the power of creating your own products at home.

Homemade solutions cost just pennies on the dollar when compared with store-bought versions. Not only are they inexpensive, you know exactly what’s in them and can trust their production. Do a quick search online to find recipes for virtually any type of cleaner. Don’t forget to add some essential oils for a scent boost that will be custom to your house – feel at home right when you walk in the door. Try starting with these:

  • Diluted white vinegar – works great as an all-purpose cleaner and deodorizer with no additions needed!
  • Spray cleaner made with white vinegar and water
  • Furniture polish created with lemon oil and warm water
  • Bathroom cleaner containing baking soda and essential oils

If you don’t have the time or inclination to whip up your own green products, or seek out a whole new non-toxic cleaning suite, reach out to an expert. I am the only house cleaner in the Boston area who is a registered Actionista for The Women’s Voice on Earth, an organization whose purpose is to “stop the toxic assault on women’s health and the planet by engaging, inspiring, and mobilizing women to call for a thriving, toxic-free future.”  I am passionate about helping families and businesses keep their spaces tidy using only products that are better for people and the environment. And of course, keep following the blog so that you can get tips, tricks, and more product reviews.

Earning Clients’ Trust

We hired House Bliss to do a deep cleaning before we moved into our new home. Moving-in itself is already a huge stress. The staff was very assuring and communication was great. They did an excellent and very thorough job. No detail missed! From window sill, baseboard, floors, ceiling fans, they did it all. They left the house spotless and really made us feel comfortable moving into the house. We’d highly recommend House Bliss Cleaning to our friends and family.
